Derrick J. Johnson

Education
Following his graduation from Leesville High School, Derrick followed in his father's footsteps and joined the United States Army. He proudly served his country for over a decade receiving multiple honors and promotions. Wanting to further his education, he then attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Louisiana State University at Alexandria where he completed his bachelor's degrees in Business informatics and Business Management respectively. Believe it or not when he initially enrolled, he wasn't sure what he wanted to pursue. Following that achievement up, he decided to pursue a law degree because he felt as though it would increase his capacity to help others. Derrick is now an attorney and holds a Juris Doctor degree from Southern University Law Center.

Military Experience
Being a kid in a military family and watching those around him live lives of service, it became clear to him that a career in the military was a great way to help others. Joining the military afforded him multiple opportunities to step into leadership roles as his career took him from Louisiana to Georgia and then Texas and Iraq. His decade plus long career provided him with a plethora of unique experiences that he draws from to this day.

As a Motor Transport Operator, he got firsthand experience leading teams, executing plans, and logistics. He was a decorated soldier being honorably discharged after receiving several honors/medals such as the Iraq Campaign Medal with two stars, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. Helping his fellow soldiers and veterans, especially those facing homelessness, remains a lifelong mission that he is incredibly passionate about.

Political Experience
No stranger to public service, Derrick has held multiple elected offices including Town of Cheneyville Alderman before becoming the Mayor of Cheneyville. As an elected official in Cheneyville, Derrick has been instrumental in major projects that include getting grant money to fix drainage issues in the town as well as tackle road maintenance. In keeping with his drive to help others he is very active in the Louisiana Municipal Association where he is currently the 1st Vice President. In addition, he's also a member of the Louisiana Municipal Black Caucus where he previously served as President was pivotal in the creation of a scholarship fund honoring two past Presidents and trailblazers.

Closing
Derrick has more than 20+ years of leadership experience from his time in the military and as an elected official. He uses that knowledge everyday as works to help others and give a voice to the underrepresented among us. Derrick says grit and hard work are the best way to change the world. He aspires to be a role model to the young men around him and serve as an example of what you can do for others to improve the community you live in.
